Secondary grasslands, formed after deforestation or removal of plantations, have completely different species compositions from primary grasslands (4, 6). Forbs with USOs and underground trees are particularly vulnerable, with no recovery to old-growth conditions after decades of natural succession.
Development has curtailed the number and extent of grassland fires, and the lack of seasonal fires threatens the health of the world’s grasslands. Only 5 percent of the world’s grasslands are being protected and maintained, and they remain the most endangered biome in the world.
Grassland, area in which the vegetation is dominated by a nearly continuous cover of grasses. Grasslands occur in environments conducive to the growth of this plant cover but not to that of taller plants, particularly trees and shrubs.
Mixed grasslands have grasses that grow around 60-90 cm high and about 40-60 cm of rain each year. Short grasslands have short grasses and receive very little rainfall each year, less than 15 cm. Grasslands around the world are becoming extinct as they are where people make farms and towns because of the flatness and ease of clearing.

Throughout the world, grasslands have been valued for their dark, rich soils, abundant natural forage and their relative ease of use, especially when compared with heavily-forested environments.
Grassland biomes are unaltered areas of land where grass is the dominant plant life, as opposed to other terrestrial biomes where trees occupy most of the land surface. Grassland are found around the globe and have served as grazing areas for a large number of animals, and have been exploited as farming grounds or plantations by humans.
